I thought retirement would be more relaxing. It’s been anything but, at least in this first month. Part of that is because we decided to do the work needed to get our house ready to sell ourselves after a contractor quoted us $14K to paint, fix the siding and a few other things.
My dad had a painting business and I worked with him, so I know how to paint. (Hubby is pretty handy and can fix just about anything.)
But we’re not 18 years old any more. I’ll be honest. This is kicking out butts!
Still, we are close to the end. Our daughter is now comfortably settled in her first apartment. We’re checking off the rooms that are “done” one by one. I’ve never been more happy to clean. It’s not painting, (and I am to the point where I can hear the paint roller in my sleep) and it means that room is DONE!
We’ve also been liquidating furniture and things we don’t have room for at the new house, or things that no longer serve us. We gave away a piano, sold the dining room table, and have donated 10 carloads of children’s toys, videos, clothing, furniture, and stuff in general.
Our daughter raided the kitchen and took almost all the dishes, utensils, pots and pans, spices and canned goods. We want her to have them, but she only left us with two forks and spoons, no colander and only three pans, so trying to cook and keep enough energy on our bodies for all this work has been a challenge. We’re making it work.
(Are you tired yet?)
This week though, is Thanksgiving and I am reminded that all this work serves a purpose. Everyday we are one step closer to being able to move so we can be with my MIL who needs our help and I’m thankful we’re able to do it.
We’ll be there before we know it.
We’ve started the “change of address” process and will be getting vehicles registered in Arkansas, bills transferred to the new address, new drivers licenses and updated passports (cause we gonna need a vacation when this is all over) and - the hardest of all - canceled our Internet service along with all the streaming services.
Nothing seems more final.
This is happening!
Anyone want to buy a very large house?
