On the Road to WriterCon

WriterCon is an annual writer's conference right here in my hometown of Oklahoma City. I started going a half-dozen years ago when I was still an "aspiring" writer. In 2019, I wrote in my notes "In the next year, I will do one thing that will get me invited to be a speaker at WriterCon 2020." I didn't know what that one thing would be, but I had a goal. In February of 2020, I went on the WriterCon cruise, and I submitted the one manuscript that scared me the most -- the one I never wanted anyone to read because it was 'too far out there'. We work-shopped the book, put together a marketing plan and practiced pitching the stories to publishers and editors. Little did I know, I was pitching my book to my publisher. Within a couple of weeks, I had a contract for what would become The Veritas Codex series.

In September of 2020, I achieved my goal and spoke at WriterCon 2020 the same weekend The Veritas Codex (book 1) was released. I spoke at WriterCon 2021 and I'm exciting to be speaking at WriterCon 2022 next weekend!

My topic this year is Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, which I think so many authors and business professionals face at some point in their career. The feeling that you're just a great big fraud and sooner or later, everyone else is going to figure it out. I must confess, I'm one of them. It's a challenge for me, but I've found that just recognizing the sources of my insecurities is the first step to getting past them. I'll provide some other useful tips you can use to get out of your own way. I hope you'll be there.

I hope to see you Friday, September 2nd at WriterCon 2022!
